Mr. Haynes goofs again? LH injection Idle Air question 200 1983

Good morning,

Recent post reminds me to be skeptical of info in DIY manuals.

A gent wanted to test operation of the Air Control Valve on an '84 w/LH injection.

Haynes book says to apply BATTTERY voltage (i.e. 12 or so) volts to the valve once it's off the engine to test for operation.

Poster sensibly asks if this might be too much voltage, the valve is controlled by the ECU which as far as I understand uses a "control" voltage of 5 V, like I see marked on the circuit boards inside this PC.

Is following info. also incorrect: "on 2 [pin] valves...the piston should close when voltage is applied and open when the voltage source is removed." ???

Haynes also says, "on 3 [pin] valves, remove the part and check that the piston moves freely by moving and rotating the valve back and forth."

Anyone care to chime in on how this setup really works?

Frank in oHIo
