Spark plug wire to plug connection question... 200

I've been messing with my spark plug wires (one cylinder not firing) and in the process I realized these aren't like the ones on my old Chevy's!

inside the boot that goes on the plug there is only a small hole with a clip that looks like it clips onto the small diameter threaded metal end of the spark plug.

my issue is that it would seem that when I place the boot over the spark plug I don't feel like the clip is coming into contact with the plug let alone clipping onto it!

have I threaded my plugs too far into the engine? thus making it so the metal plug wire boots won't allow the clips to reach the plug?

OR is it supposed to be like this with the spark jumping from the clipped hole to the spark plug?

p.s. - it's running fine but I had a bad wire and I'm wondering if the lack of connection might be cause my new wires to go bad.
