I've gotta disagree with both the compression and safety switch advice. If the compression was shot, the wipers should have been fine (battery power alone should run the wipers)... thus I imagine the problem is electrical in nature. I don't think it's the safety switch, because the car is designed to not crank at all if the switch doesn't think it's in neutral or park.. cranking over slowly eliminates that.

I'd vote for some sort of ground being shot, or maybe one of the cables to/from the battery (how's the back of the alternator look)?
