740 Pre Pump....Can It Be Wired Incorrectly at Pump ? 700

We spent a good part of the day replacing a 740 pre pump in an '88 sedan. Because it has the extra tank on top, making it 85litres, the job was not straight forward.

Only having a smaller 240 pump handy we used it. The pump caused the car to behave worse than when operating only on the main pump. In fact on the main pump alone it is very smooth, even under load. Just a slight whine.

Questions. Our testing suggested it is not possible to have the pump operate at all if the polarity of the wires attached to the pump are the wrong way. Is this correct?
Should the smaller 240 pump have worked okay?

Thanks in advance.
