'84 240DL won't pass CA SMOG 200 1982

I have an '82 240DL that won't pass SMOG. It actually *aborted* the test because the smog equipment wouldn't track a certain type of emission (I guess because it was so far out of range). The car has almost 200k miles on it but runs pretty good except for the emission problem (you can actually smell the emissions inside the car while driving it). Do you think it's worth it to pay a shop to inspect it and tell me what's wrong? How much should I pay for an estimate on something like this? I would like to get it running for a few hundred or less.
