paint problem 200 1988

We have a silverish gray color 1988 240. The paint is pretty good, except for this one area on top, where a rough area of approximately 4” by 12” on the top passenger side front is getting real thin and the white primer is showing through in blotches. We hate to have to put out for a complete paint job seeing how the rest is quite good. The small bottle of touch up with the finger nail type brush we have from the dealer really won’t work. Finding a spray can of any color close enough to at least not look too bad is not easy apparently. Any ideas that might be relatively inexpensive to make that area look better? We don’t know why it seems to be only that area that is looking blotchy. Do you think it might be possible to put the matching touch up paint from Volvo in some sort a small spray bottle and have it do at least an OK job? Thanks for your advice.
