Newbie needs help with adding an AC to my RHD 144 140-160

New RHD member needs help with A/C (long)

Hello Volvo lovers,

First time on the brickboard today and loving it already! I am the proud owner of a 1974 Volvo 144 De Luxe. I have imported this car from the UK and I probably have the only RHD 140 Series on the continent as I now live in the Netherlands.

This summer I have planned a holiday to Spain and Italy with my beast.

However the weather over there around that time made me decide that I want to add A/C to the car. Availability of parts in the Netherlands is really good so I got all A/C parts of a US import car and after cleaning all the bits. I was ready to start the project.

And this is where I came to a really weird conclusion, the compressor wouldn’t fit its original place on the left hand side of the engine. This was because the alternator on standard RHD cars is also fitted on the left hand side of the engine on a special bracket. Taking the alternator and fitting it on the engine (B20) fitting on the right hand side was no problem however I could not find a belt that was short enough to get the right tension without the alternator hitting the (RHD) Steering box.

I went to my local Volvo dealership to have a look in the parts catalogue and came to the conclusion that I was missing a so called RHD A/C supplementary kit which is basically a kit with two brackets (one with a tensioning pulley for the alternator and one spacer bracket for the alternator) original part no. 282588-3 I believe this kit was used on all RHD B20 cars with A/C so 1800 series as well as 140 series.

So here comes the request to you guys…. Who has one of these kits new or used and would sell me this so I can compete my project. I am willing to pay a good price and the extra costs for shipment are no problem at all!

I can return the favour by searching for parts on the continent there are lots and lots of Volvo specialists here in the Netherlands for used and new parts

Thank you for reading my letter and understanding my problem.

Kind regards,

Hans Siewers
