Engine Check Light Inoperative! 700 1989

I recently purchased an 89 740GL and had a 55 point inspection done on it by a local volvo mechanic.

Amoung the problems he found was that the check engine light is not coming on, even though there were several codes in the ECU. He said that there were 3 possibilites: The check engine light was disconnected, the light bulb was removed, or the light bulb burned out.

How do I check this? I dont have any of the manuals, so you'll have to bear with me.
