Volvo Likes To Wander - Revisited 200 1986

I took my wandering 86 244 to Les Schwab Tires and Alignment (great tire company in the Northwest) and asked them to inspect the front end for the cause of uneven tire wear and a tendency to wander. They concluded that the car needs new struts, new shocks, and then an alignment. Total of $259.97 with Gabriel parts.

Is this a fairly common cause of wandering and uneven tire wear?

How hard of a DIY job is strut replacement?

Any recommendations on brand names and sources for struts and shocks? I think OEM quality would be good enough. I just want my daughter in a safe car. It doesn't have to handle any better than stock, but an improvement over stock would be nice if it's not too expensive.
