Gas Tank Gauge issue 900 1994

First of all the Gas Tank gauge has been working on and off for almost year. I've been able to keep an eye on my gas consumption using the tripometer. However I'd really like to get this gauge working again without costing too much. My main mechanic told me it had to do with something in the gas tank, whereas a local dealer said it was probably something electrical in dashboard. It did used to pop back on when I flicked it with my finger, but it pretty much quite responding after a month. It recently started working again but only every no and then.
