Vampyric cooling fan 900 1993

I got into the '93 960 on Friday morning only to find that the battery was completly flat.
When my kind neighbor jump started the car for me, the cooling fan went on at full blast and would not go off. So much current was being drawn that the engine would barely idle!
When I shut the car off the night before, the fan was not running. I waxed the car that evening and would have heard it?
I shut off the fan by disconnecting the relay located near the battery.
When I reconnected the relay (in daylight) for testing the fan did not go on!
What forces of darkness are at play?
Is the cooling fan relay at fault. Can it be resoldered as suggested elsewhere?
The coolant temp sensor was replaced recently and it seems off the hook. When it went I had a hot starting problem.
Strangely, the beast runs quite well with its fan exorcised, never getting out of the normal range.
Thanks for your suggestions,
Dan
