OK, after some research on-line and through phone calls, I discovered the following for my 1990 240.

It costs about 1000 bucks for the local Volvo shop to make a change over to R134.

It costs about $130 to recharge with R12.

I think recharging is the way to go. My question is why is the AC not working right now? Could it be a bad compressor? ( I don't hear any noise or abnormal function, in fact the AC works a bit, just really weak)

Is there something I can do prior to refilling to ensure no future leak?
Like changing some o-rings or gaskets that are prone to failure?
My logic is that if it's empty of freon now, it must have leaked out at some point.

Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.
