UNIDENTIFIED GAUGE IN THE BOOT! (TRUNK) 900 1991

Hi all,

I've had my '91 940 SE Turbo for about 10 months now and with the MOT test fast approaching I thought I'd give the old girl a bit of a check over.
The ride in the rear of the car has always been very firm, a little uncomfortable to be honest!
Whilst clearing out the area around the spare wheel, I came across a small gauge, bolted to the floor, with a couple of air hoses and an air valve running to/from it. The needle on the gauge is showing 'maximum'!
The car was originally fitted with a Volvo tow hitch, which is stored in one of those small compartments either side of the spare wheel, so I think I can safely assume that a previous owner towed a trailer.
My question is, has this car been fitted with some kind of air suspension, which for whatever reason has been cranked up to maximum, can it be adjusted? or does this gauge have nothing to do with the suspension and it's just a case of shot shocks?
If adjustable shocks have been fitted, can they be replaced with conventional shocks? I think I remember reading some time ago that some Volvo's used Citroen suspension parts, is that correct?
I was told a little while ago that the front struts would need replacing before the MOT test, so I guess I could be looking at quite an expensive month!
As a foot note, Some 700 and 900 spares here in the UK have been slashed in price at the main dealers, I had to replace the turbo air intake hose last week, only a couple of months ago, it would have cost me over a 100 UK Pounds,
I paid just over 50!
I hope someone can shed a little light on all of this!

Cheers,

Brian.
