740 Reverse Problem 700

Just took a call from the wife, informing me our 1987 Volvo 745GLE won't shift into reverse. Manual tranny with the lock out ring on the stick shift. From her description, it sounds as if the lock out is duff, i.e., no tension when you pull the ring. From this I'm assuming it's a linkage issue, but never having had to deal with such I thought I'd see if anyone knew better. Couldn't find anything on this subject in the FAQ section, don't have a manual here at work, and just wondering what fun awaits for the weekend! As always, thanks in advance.
