Unexpected valve values 200 1980

Hi All,

Am trying to quiet valve noise by adjusting valve shims. If I read Haynes correctly I am looking for a (cold engine) target of .018 inches at TDC at each cylinder when checking shim clearance initially. I get: #1-.014,.014 #2-.015,.015 #3-.014,.014 #4-.014,.014
I would think the values would be higher than .018 because lower values would require smaller shims. I am sure I have TDC at each cylinder. What's up?

As an aside, does anyone know the nomenclature of the alternator bolt for the pivot end of the adjustable slide.

Thanx
