red hot cat....rough running....possible clogged exhaust????? 200

i have an 84 turbo 245glt.....its been rough running and i have been thru all the bad idle troubleshooting, got it to run better but still rough at the lower end. have to check out the cold start injector and the thermal time switch still, but i drove it the last couple days and i noticed today when i got home and looked at it, the catalytic converter was red hot in the daylight, i know the get hot, but i have never seen one that hot even in the dark....could i possibly have a partly clogged exhaust and too much back pressure caaaaausing me a problem? i just tightened the exhaust manifold and i still have an exhaust click that i cant quite track down.......any help would be appreciated.
thanks
jon
