Starter Bad? 900 1992

Recently, everytime I start my car I get a loud noise from the engine. It seems to be increasing. After it starts the noise stops. I am thinking it is the starter. The noise is like a suttle grinding sound. How easy it to replace the starter and do they make noises before they die?
