testing OD solenoid 120-130 1967

This question is about a 123GT, but figured there would be more OD experience on this forum.

The OD on my car was overhauled at 86K miles. The car now has 136K on it. Several months ago the OD went from working perfectly, to not at all in one shift, so i suspected an electrical problem. The relay and switch work, and oil level was good. Everything is out of the car now for a clutch change. The OD is the older style with the single terminal solenoid. I grounded the body of the OD unit, and touched the terminal wire to the positive pole of the battery. No click. Is this a reliable test of the solenoid?

Thanks
