thermostat causing stalling? 200 1983

My temp gauge used to work just fine. Then when all of my intermittent stalling started, the temp gauge just went down permanently to C and doesnt budge no matter what. No the gauge could just have a problem itself, but if it is the thermostat or something not working, could this cause the gauge to think the engine is always cold and also cause intermittent stalling at the same time? Is this likely and what should I do? Thanks for the help, Doug
