quick question--little alternator wire 200 1986

I was just going to trace the wire, but it's raining so I want this to go as fast as possible. My question is, where does the smaller red wire coming off the alternator go after going under the block? Where does it connect to things? I know it is for the idiot light which charges the alternator, and I think this might be causing my problem with low charging. I want to replace a section of that wire that I think is bad. Any help would be great. thanks again
