Possible U-joint replacement soon? 700

Okay, so I posted a message a while back about a moaning sound coming from what seems like the front end of my 745 wagon, and I read up on the FAQ and it sounds EXACTLY like the description of U-joint failure. I just bought this car for $1400, and a knowledgable friend (who lives about an hour away) and I plan on doing some of our own work to offset the costs of getting this thing in order for daily driving (tune up, fluid flushes, fuel filter replacement), but I think this is something I'll leave to my mechanic - along with rear engine seals. In any matter, is there a way to "eyeball" this and find out if this is exactly what is going on? And what's the best way to eyeball motor mounts as well to see if they need replacement? And is it safe to drive this thing 5-10 miles a day for the next week or two with this problem? And what do shops usually charge for u-joints to be replaced? Thanks so much!!!
