You may be able to simply change the Alt. brushes out for a fraction of the cost of a new Alt. Many times this is all that wears down where there is not sufficiant contact for electricity to be produced.

Easy to do too. just have to remove the oil filter and pull ou the brushes, you could even do it now and see just how long they are, there is a spec for how long they are supposed to be.
