1988 240GL Brake Light question

In addition to McDuck's suggestion, I'll add, sand or file the three ears on those taillight sockets, and make certain the bulb area is free of white corrosion, as they so often are.
The ground connection may well be corroded too- this is a black wire, to a small sheetmetal screw on the body inside the trunk.
Clean, sand, file it until you've got good clean metal at all connection points, and then see what you find for light operation.
Sounds to me like a classic case of poor, dirty grounds.
