Should I Buy This 93 940? 900

I am in the market for a 940. I currently drive a 89 240DL in superb shape which I plan to pass on to my son by this summer. Some of you may have read my earlier post ref looking at a dealer's 94 940T earlier this week in which my mechanic recommended me to stay away from as it appeared to possibly have a history of overheating and head damage. Today, I looked at a 1993 940 non turbo, 14K miles from a private party asking $5500. I took it to my mechanic (yes he was in his shop on 1 Jan!) and he put it up on the rack. He found the following that needs to be replaced or repaired:
- Exhaust
- Strut rod bushings
- Front seals
- Transmission mounts
- Splash pan

He added that if he was to do the repairs, he'd also recommend replacing the water pump for good measure while doing the front seals. Total costs to put it into good running condition $500-$700. It has new tires, brakes, spark plugs, oil and air filter. The interior is in good condition with the leather showing appropriate signs of wear for it's age. The car was not garaged for most of it's life and the exterior paint (white)is in o.k. condition with some dings here and there, some tree sap, etc. My mechanic felt that the car was worthy of buying and recommended I offer $4,000 and no more. We don't have to have a third car yet. I figure we'll need to buy a third car by this summer sometime, so I have the luxury of waiting. Though I like this car, I am wondering if I should hold out and wait for a newer 940 with lower mileage. My ideal find would be the 1995 940. Here are my questions for you Bricksters out there:
- Should I hold out for a newer model with lower miles
- Offer the PO $4000 and see if they take it
- Buy it and keep looking for a 1995 940
- Should I consider moving up to a 960 or even newer model?
Let me have it!
