OD and oil level 200 1986

Hi, i have a 245 1986 wagon with manual tranny. to the best of my knowledge there should be no connection between the oil level and the OD workig but empirical data shows otherwise. twice so far in the last year did i drive around with low oil levels (forgot to check, forgot oil change) and both times the OD just stopped working. like COMPLETELY. topped up the oil - working again. under normal conditions the OD is normally not working in the first 15 minutes or so and fine afterwards. any possible explanations?
