Ping rattle ping at higher rpms 200 1983

1983 244. This car was on its deathbed. Bad motor, hadn't been driven in a year and sitting around soggy Seattle. My brother found a replacement motor in a wagon that he bought (Both B23Fs).

Swaped motors. (New engine wiring harness.)

No start. Checked everyting. Finally bought a used ECU off Ebay. The ECU was offered as a certian Bosch number, but was advertised that it would work with another Bosch number. The guy sent me the wrong number, but claims that they are interchangable. Put the ECU in and it started right up.

Now, however, it runs great to about 50 mph whereupon it starts pinging/knocking. Strangly, the pinging seems to be less under load. For example it will be cruising at about 50 mph and upon throttle decrease it pings down to about 45 mph.

I've tried adjusting the timing through a wide range of settings and more or less get the same relationship.

Any suggestions?

- Kirby
