Really Need help on Kick Down Cable replacement - 1988 240GL

In the process of replacing the kickdown cable on my daughters 1988 240GL. Got the cable connected in the tranny and went to put the sheath end in - cannot get it in all the way (lacking about 1/4 inch). Big fingers and small area.

I really would appreciate any suggestions or recommended tricks please.

Thanks - Ted in Albuquerque

PS - from a former post it was highly recommended that I drop the exchaust system but did not (stupid me). For future reference anyone doing this should really pay attention to all suggestions.
