Really Need help on Kick Down Cable replacement - 1988 240GL

Did finish the job - almost. Still cannot get the friction-Fit end to go in. Tried almost everything - no luck.

Question is what risks am I running by not seating the end completely? I did try prying, pulling, etc and could not get it in. I also tried to pry it out (did not try too hard) - it seems stuck in there pretty well.

My daughter did drive it around the neighborhood (she couldn't wait) and everything seemed fine as far as leaks are concerned - any thoughts?

Really appreciate your (and everyones) input. Once again I will comment that if someone reading this decides to do this LOWER THE EXHAUST.

Thanks - Ted (and daughter Nicole) in Albuquerque
