"By the way, the distance between your well drawn red lines is supposed to be 0.019"?"

Nope, the distance between the red lines is the distance between the outer surface of the bearing cone and the axle flange. This distance = shim thinkness - 0,019".

You can measure the distance between outer surface of the bearing cone and the axle flange (red lines) and add 0,019". The sum would be the total shim package thickness. But as I explained, I rather tend to 'trail and error' the thickness of the package, by holding a straight object (black) on the outer surface of the bearing cone and then try to fit the shim package (purple) (holding in your other hand) in between this object and the axle flange. (and then the shim package should jus NOT fit, if it does fit in that space, there will be stress on the bearing once the backing plate and shims are thightened)
