Transmission drain nut spins: cannot tighten or loosen 900

I decided that since I was driving to the outer banks it would be a good idea to change the tranny fluid. I removed the drain plug and drain off the usual 2-3 quarts and started to replace the plug. Then lightning struck: I tightened the nut by hand to make sure it threaded correctly and then when I thought it tight enough I put a wrench on it to get it snug. Not screaming tight but just snug (1 finger on the wrench). Well the darn nut spins and spins. It won't come out, it won't tighten up. I can make it hand tight but if I put the wrench on it just spins again. I drove the car and so far no leaks but I am
a little concerned (heck, I'm plain freaked out) by this. Any advice would be greatfully accepted.
