I for one don't do any boneheaded things....except for the time i replaced the v6 in my old Bronco II with a factory authorized rebuild. A friend and I worked all day (almost dawn to dusk) to pull a v6 and install another and were very proud of ourselves (and VERY dirty) when it started up and ran well. I drove the truck for about a week or so and it suddenly started rapping like crazy. Long story short, we ended up pulling the motor again swearing about the crappy rebuild job that had been done by the rebuilder...until we removed the oil pan to transfer it to the 2nd rebuilt motor. There on the oil pump screen was an adhesive backed sticker blocking any flow into the pump and causing the motor to lunch. In our hurry to install the motor , we had failed to remove the startup procedure sticker from the bottom of the rebuilt block and it eventually became unstuck and was sucked up onto the pump screen.
All did end well though, I was given the second rebuild for free since the first appeared to be defective and they also paid me an installation fee even though i did it in the driveway.
There are MANY others too but this one still comes up in conversation occassionally.
