I like your line of reasoning, I think I'll pursue it.

The plugs are NGK copper and the plug and coil wires are Magnecore, both installed less than 5k miles ago. The cap and rotor are Bosch and have... let's say 20k on them. I'm going to give those parts the benefit and go farther back to the coil and primary wiring.

Also, at pennies a foot, it wont hurt to replace the vacuum hoses.

The car has good acceleration and throttle response for the chunk that it is. If it weren't for this inspection, I'd never suspect that anything was up. My margin of failure was so slim that a friend suggested I top off the tank and take it right back for re-inspection.
