Rear window defroster not hot enough?

Hello again. So I did the brakes and all set with that. Brought it to Midas around the corner for an oil change and have them flush the brake fluid, which they confirmed it was dirty. They also said the following (whcih a mechanic friend told me in Sept)

1) The driver side Ball joint has some "play" in it.

2) The Right Front tie rod has some play in it as well.

ALSO, when it is 0 degrees, and I pull out of my driveway, the transmission stays in a low gear and 1/4 later kicks back to normal gears. is this an indication I should have the transmission fluid changed? (its been 45k miles since last time)

Appreciate the hellp, because I never monkied around with ball joints or tierods. don't you normally need a LIFT to work on those??
