Hoping someone could shed some light on why my 16V 1989 740GLE with 130K will not TURN OVER (approx. 10 minutes after stopping) after a long drive or after idling for and extended period. At first, I thought it was the battery. Replaced with a new one 5 months ago. Then it happened again. Technician thought it was the starter. The starter was replaced with a new one 4 months ago, but there still seemed to be a slight pause on ocassion (when hot) before it would begin spinning. The symptom hasn't turned up at all during the winter months, but now that we're getting a few unusually warm days, (50+) it has happened again. What has been consistent about all no-start events is that the car will start right away with a jump. If I don't jump it and let the engine cool for about 30 minutes, it will start right up. It really seems to be centered around how hot the engine compartment is getting after sitting for 10 minutes as the temp rises while engine is off. If I attempt to start immediately after a long drive or long idle (within 2 minutes or less) it will start right up. During all no-start events I've also played with the shifter, thinking it might be a faulty neutral safety switch, but that's definitely not it as the jump or cool off seems to do the trick. A few of the posts I've been reading indicate a bad ground. I've cleaned battery terminals and frame ground. Could it be the engine ground? Or, am I completely off and it's something else under the hood? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
