mess in the air inlet hose

I took the 3" corrugated hose off from the air filter/AMM to the manifold/throttle and in the bottom there was a puddle (two tablespoons of old water/oil/goop?. By the trouble I had breaking it loose I would say that it has not been off recently/ever in 170K. What is it, how did it get there, is this bad news? I cleaned it well and will recheck in ? miles.
