What are precautions for not damaging steering rack during inner tie rod replacement? 200 1989

I have a cam steering rack. I'm going to replace the drivers side inner tie rod end first. (It's the worst one observed during the 9 o'clock - 3o'clock tire wiggle test).

Here's my procedure:
1. Disconnect inner from the outer tie rod end by loosening the locknut on the threaded portion of the inner tie rod and unscrewing it from the outer tie rod end.
2. Pull off the boot.
3. Disconnect inner tie rod end from the steering shaft ...not sure whether I have a lock washer or some sort of peen that hold the inner tie rod from working its way off the shaft. (<--- I have '89 240..anyone know what holds it on??? How to remove it??)

The new boots cost about $8.00 each...and the inner tie rods cost about $20 each. I will probably buy from Voluparts.com in Atlanta...after I find out what kind they sell. Not sure what kind of grease, lubrication, etc is inside the boot area. (Do I need to lube???)

Above all else..I DO NOT want to damage the steering rack during all of this...so I need your words of wisdom and precautions and/or any other convienient maintenance items to do while I'm inside the "booted" area. (<---I've already replaced tie rod ends/balljoints)
