Automatic transmisions are they Interchangeable? 200

I want to swap tranys from my 1990 240 dl non turbo to my 85 245dl wagon. The 90 seems to run alot smoother and more efficent. The 85 trany shifts funny; it shifts hard into 2nd (jerks) and i have to rev high then let off the petal for it to shift to 3rd and 4th. Sound familar to anyone? maybe i can get away with a easy fix and not have to swap trans. BTW i am selling my 90 240 to a friend for $800. The rack and pinion is shot (leaks all the PS fluid out both ends) was also wondering if there is an easy fix for the seals in the rack and pinion?? probably not, but worth askin. Thanks for any input.
