Chrome trim along side removal for painting/re-install 200

I'm re-painting my '79 242gt, and I'm curious if someone could offer me advice about removing and reistalling the chrome trim that rings the entire vehicle. It seems to snap off, but then there are the white plastic trim clips that hold them in place. I've tried to tug them out, but I don't want to break them. How do they come out, and how would I re-install both the clips and the trim?

Or is there any aftermarket adhesive backed chrome trim that might work? Thanks for your help!
Dan
