turbo swap 700 1989

IS there a major difference between intercooled and non intercooled motors ? I have been looking for a local engine to swap for my atmospheric and have the chance to buy an 84 240 with a rebuilt engine/ turbo that rolled - but it has no intercooler and obviously older engine management systems, should I wait for a 700 series or is this engine 'close enough '
