pulley problems 1800

i am trying to upgrade my old generator to a new one wire alternator. everything seems to be going good except one problem. i am trying to use the old bracket--ive removed the rubber place holders and slid the bracket as far forward as possible and made a new tension bar but, the pulley still sits back about 1/2 to 1/4 of an inch. and im not sure if this is going to put strain on the system. it seems like quite a job to get in there and actually modify the bracket and i dont think i have the tools. so what is the opinion on this? is the alignment of the pulley necessary?
