B230 Overheating Problem after water pump blew 700 1990

Hi, Just hoping that someone can help me with this one. I had a water pump failure and the engine overheated. I replaced the three front oil seals, timing belt, tensioner, new water pump. It has sat for nearly three months during repair and I started it today, it took about ten cranks with the throttle to the floor and it started. Sounds great, no smoke, no leaks. I took it for a 1 mile test drive and it overheated quickly. I turned on the heater full blast to relief some of the heat but only cold air came out. When I got home the radiator resivoir was full, I looked in the oil cap and could see oil actually bubbling from the heat. I am suspecting a defective t-stat but would like some assitance with this if anyone can help. Thanks so much, Noel Smith Morrow, Ohio
