banging the drum... again and again... 120-130

OK, next weekend I'm going to try my third attempt (with a second puller) at getting the rear drums off and I just want to be sure I'm doing it properly. So, you bang the bejeezus out of it to get 'em off..... but, bang the arms of the puller in a clockwise fashion to put more and more pressure on the end of the axle and just keep banging, or bang those a bit to get 'em tight then bang on the end of the thing? And when tightening you have to have the emergency brake on (so it doesn't just spin and spin)- let that up before banging on the end (if that's what you do)? PB Blaster, propane, boiling water and a lot of sweat and cursing and still no luck! And everything else is going relatively smoothly...
