surging idle, coughed up smoke under hood like a 'front-fire' 200 1978

Driving down the road just fine, then car started to idle bad, like it was fuel-starved, then started lurching. Replaced fuel filter, checked fuel pumps-seem to be ok, New cap and rotors, Swapped out fuel relay switch. Could the timing belt have slipped and is causing all this? Could it be the FPR? I'm at my wits end here. Car is in great shape with a brand new clutch.
Any hints, ideas or advice will be greatly appreciated!
