Fuse #12 suddenly blows on the road 200 1986

Hi, I'm on a road trip with my family and our 1986 240 DL, yesterday after a few hours of driving our airconditioning stopped (98 degrees outside). The AC has been working fine all summer and although its the original system (R12) it was recently recharged and I was told the compressor looked good and did not have any major leaks...

So after the AC stoped, at the next rest stop I notice fuse 12 is popped, so I replace it and watch as it pops again as soon as I turn on the AC...

Is this how my AC will ultimately die (blowing fuses)? Or, is there something I can check other than looking for obvious shorts somewhere? Also, I must confess that my updated wiring harness is home waiting to be installed, could the old degrading harness cause this sort of problem?

Thanks in advance, we have a few days before getting back on the road and if there is something I can do my family would be thankful...

Steve
