automatic transmission shifting - hard between 1st and 2nd 700 1989

For the last month the transmission has been acting strange. When shifting from first to second the shift is very hard, like it is being 'hammered' into gear. Other gears are fine and smooth, just when starting out do we notice this problem. We have tried the "Lucas" additive, and it has done nothing to resolve this issue.
In the morning when the car is first driven, it shifts normal, but after a few minutes it begins this hammering. Any thoughts? '89, 745 - 356000 km
