What condition was the top cover in?
The long shifter connection at the box cover becomes quite worn over time.
If you have a lot of slop in the shifter that could contribute to your problem.

I have tightened up mine by increasing the pin diameter. Took some patience to get it right, but it now shifts positively with little slop. I imagine that's what it felt like when new.
