Sounds like he did a more proper repair, but on mine I just cut some small rectangular strips of sheet metal and wrapped them around the little pins on the shift lever to act as shims. Took about 15 minutes total, I lucked out on the thickness of the sheetmetal I tried just happening to mesh nicely with the wear in my cover, and was rewarded with much less slop in the shifter.
