Yes. When the motor goes round and round the coil should always have 12V+ on onse side, but the ground on the other side (the wire going to the distributor) should be alternately open and grounded. Only when it goes from grounded to open does the coil make a spark. The wire going to the coil leads to the points, which open and close as they slide over the little 4-sided cam. As an almost separate function the high tension lead from the coil is routed off to the appropriate sparkplug by the rotor turning inside the distributor cap and pointing to each spark plug's terminal in succession.
