Trunk Won't Open -- HELP 140-160 1969

I finally decided to get off my duff and get to work on the '69 144 that's been sitting in the driveway for about two years. I tried opening the trunk to survey the rust in the spare wheel wells and I am having no luck getting the trunk open. It opened when I bought it and the mechanism turns smoothly but the lid just won't pop open. Any ideas????
