Testing Hall Sensor out of Car? 700 1985

I read somewhere that you can remove the distributor. Probe the red wire, switch on the ignition and spin the distro by hand and check the readings each time it passes the hall sensor, instead of crawling under the dash. Anyone know if this is accurate?
